Title
Fort Lewis
Subject
US Army Fort Lewis near Tacoma, WA
Description
This is an image of the military base where Dorothy Managan, US Army Nurse Corps nurse and instructor, trained US Army Nurse Corps recruits and served as a nurse herself during World War II.
Fort Lewis was constructed between 1927 and 1939, and in 1972 became the Fort Lewis Museum. General Dwight D. Eisenhower served at the fort between 1940 and 1941.
Many American nurses served in forts similar to this one during the war, instead of shipping overseas to serve. Even those who did travel during their service often trained at bases in the states first.
