Exhausting Work

Subject

US Navy flight nurse catches up on sleep en route from Okinawa to a Mariana Base Hospital

Description

Serving as a nurse in World War II was exhausting, as is shown by the image here of this navy flight nurse, Lt. Mae Hanson, taking a quick nap on board an evacuation craft. This plane was transporting wounded troops from Okinawa to a Marianas Base Hospital with even more American casualties. Hanson was going to need all the sleep she could get before the work began again upon landing. This image also highlights, if you look closely at her wrist, one of the personal items most valued by military nurses in World War II, outside of their helmets and canteens; a functional watch.
