Subject

African American army nurses complete early morning training to exercise muscles

Description

Many people are unaware of the daily activities of World War II army nurses. The women pictured here, training in Australia before being sent to work in the Pacific, are participating in an early morning workout to stretch and exercise their muscles. Part of everyday life was staying fit and healthy, and unfortunately, these images and narratives of activities for women in World War II are often left out of the bigger picture. However, the type of hard work these women were doing each day demanded that they exercise outside of their jobs to take care of themselves. This is also why military training courses were required for nurses, which is something many do not realize these women had to complete. Many nursing recruits had to practice crawling under barbed wire and through thick mud, similarly to soldiers.
