Arrival in France

Subject

US Army nurses upon arrival in France after three years of service in the war

Description

These women have just arrived in France in 1944, after serving the army for three years as war nurses. The typical image of what a World War II nurse would have looked like, especially post-service, is not what is shown in this picture. The image shows the reality, which is quite different than the public myth of a perfect woman wearing a white dress, tights, and a cape at all times, with a cap on her head. Army nurses often did not wear dresses, for practicality reasons. These "angels" dressed for their job, and in the early stages of the war they often had to borrow men's clothing that fit their job duties, until the military began issuing more useful clothing to nurses on the front lines.
