Lasting Impressions

Subject

Navy Nurse Signs Cast

Description

This picture is valuable for the simple reason that it represents one of the bright spots that nurses serving in World War II encountered on the job that could make everything worth it. The patient pictured is having a navy nurse sign his arm cast, and it is clear that the cast contains many other signatures, likely of other hospital staff and fellow patients. These personal connections with patients, and their gratitude for the care they received, much like the notes given to Dorothy Managan and her fellow nurses by their POW patients at Madigan General Hospital, speak for themselves. Moments like this one prove that these women were invaluable, and that their sacrifices and abilities as healers had powerful influence over those they came into contact with.
