Treatment in Cramped Quarters

Title
Treatment in Cramped Quarters
Subject
Army flight nurse treating troops being evacuated from Sicily
Description
American nurses had to be ready to treat wounded soldiers in any conditions, including the cramped, constantly moving, dangerous location of an evacuating aircraft. Just as Lt. Katye Swope is doing in the photo taken in July of 1943, other flight nurses had the difficult task of taking care of patients with the limited resources available on a military plane. Just a few of the issues that could arise from this might be turbulence interfering with treatment, inconvenient access to patients and their injuries, and limited space to adjust patients and use equipment. The traditional public image of World War II nurses in large, landed hospitals does not cover the entire picture of nursing during the war.
