Subject
American Army Nurses Crossing Over Muddy Terrain in Italy
Description
These women, tip-toeing through the muddy slush surrounding the tent they call, "The Powder Room," in their pajamas, are the epitome of some of the more comical struggles World War II nurses faced on the front lines. Serving in the Mediterranean theater of operations in 1944, these nurses were stationed in Anzio, Italy. The tents of the evacuation hospital where they worked to save the lives of 750 wounded soldiers are not far away from where they trudge through puddles to get to their destination. This image proves the sacrifices of creature comforts that these women were willing to make to serve, and it also exemplifies the fact that nursing on the front was not always the dignified, feminine profession that the media back home claimed it was.
